This quick tip has been extremely useful to me.
For some strange reason, on launching Inkscape you're always presented with the same set of document properties by whoever thought them up. It seems it would be natural, after inputting your desired preferences, to include a "save document properties" somewhere on that dialog.
What I did was to setup my preferences for the overwhelming majority of the documents I'll create, name it appropriately and put a link on my desktop.
For instance, since I'm working with a wide screen monitor, I made a custom size of 800x500 in landscape orientation, which makes sense, for me, if I want to use my drawing as a desktop wallpaper image. I --> saved as, inkscape_800x500 <-- and placed a link on the desktop.
If you become an Inkscape power user and work with multiple different page sizes, snap to's and grid/guides, then use a link for each.
