The first vector graphics program I used on Linux was XFig, and I found it lacking in a lot of areas. Skencil was a huge improvement, and written largely in Python, which I found to be a big plus.

Unfortunately, Skencil's development seemed to stall between the 0.6 Tkinter-based package and the 0.7 GTK-based version. As a result, it lost the lead in quality to Inkscape, which was derived from Sodipodi, and has been under vigorous development for the last few years.

Inkscape is written in C (or is it C++?), though, and so it's a little harder to extend.

Another problem for Skencil has been text processing, although it has some good extensions for handling TeX and LaTeX text.

I believe that SVG support in the latest versions of Skencil has been greatly improved, but the last version that I used seriously had very poor SVG import/export support.
